How to find us – directions to the Darnbrook Guest House.

See also the links page for details of airlines, car hire, trains, ferries etc. We can also arrange to collect you from anywhere on Skye or Kyle of Lochalsh. Please let us know your requirements.

Most people when travelling to the Isle of Skye cross the bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh. This is the fastest way if coming from Inverness but not perhaps the most scenic. If you have the time to spare, why not go “over the sea to Skye”?

Caledonian MacBryne (CalMac for short) provide a quick 20 minute service from Mallaig on the mainland to Armadale in the south of Skye on one of their modern fast ferries. We know by experience that it can be a little rough if the weather is not too good but when the sun shines, it is the perfect introduction to Skye.

However, our favourite crossing has to be from Glenelg on the mainland (just south of Kyle of Lochalsh) to Kylerhea on Skye. This little ferry takes no more than 10 minutes (and no more that 6 cars) to cross over to Skye and marks the spot where the old road used to wind down the mountains to the sea. Note: operates normally Easter – October only.

Once on Skye

Whichever route you take, you will have to pass through the second town on Skye (Broadford) in the south of the island. Continue at a leisurely pace on the main road – the A87 to Portree (the “capital” of Skye).

Portree has a long & interesting history and is well worth a day trip, but for now continue along the A87 for another 5 miles and then take the A850 road towards Dunvegan. After approx 15 miles, you will come to a turning on the right for the Waternish peninsula – the B886 (just by the “Fairy Bridge” – yes really!).

Just a few miles more and you will see the little village of Stein on the left nestling by the loch shore. Half a mile before the road branches off to Stein the Darnbrook Guest House is on the left (look for the blue sign). The kettle will be on for tea or coffee to greet you after your long journey and possibly some home-made banana & date bread to tempt you
